Fraa Erasmus is a young Inac monk living in the concreta (they were once called cloisters) of St. Edhar, a haven for mathematicians and philosophers. It is a monastery that protects scholars from the pernicious influences of the outside secular world, both by its ancient stone walls and its elaborate rituals and traditions. Over the centuries, cities and states have been built and crumbled outside the walls of the concenta. Three times, in the darkest epochs of history, violence born of superstition and ignorance invaded and devastated the closed society of mathematical science. However, the monk-scientists managed to adapt after the disasters, becoming more ascetic and less dependent on technology and the ideology of materialism. Erasmus, however, is not afraid of the outside world, for all these tragic events have become ancient history. Once a decade comes the day of the apert rite, when the gates of the concenza are thrown wide open to let in curious laymen, the ecstasies, and to let inak monks out into the world. On his first apert, Erasmus looks forward to seeing family and friends he hasn't seen since he left for the concenta. But not a week later, both his former life and the one he has embraced are on the brink of dangerous change. Powerful forces threaten the peaceful and stable lives of the monk-scientists. Only the fragile alliance between the Inaks and the Ecstasies can stand against them. One by one, Erasmus's colleagues emerge from the safety of the Concentus, hoping to avert a global catastrophe. Accidentally taking responsibility for the fate of the world, Erasmas finds himself the protagonist in a drama that will determine the future of all things, and embarks on an extraordinary journey that will take him to the most dangerous and inhospitable corners of an unfamiliar planet... and far beyond.
