Xenophontes (430 BC - 356 BC) was an ancient Greek writer and historian, student and friend of Socrates, military leader and politician. "Anabasis" is the most famous of the historical and biographical works of the Athenian Xenophontes, in which he described the campaign of the Greek army in West Asia against Babylon in 401 BC and its subsequent retreat to the ancient Greek Byzantium. For future generations, Xenophon's account transformed this campaign from a failure into "one of the greatest adventures in human history," and the work itself had a profound influence on Hellenic and Roman prose.
