1866, New Orleans. After the Civil War, slavery was officially abolished, but for many black people, the situation remained unchanged. Former slaves, brother and sister Coleman and June, remained with their former owners, the arrogant Harpers. Fleeing the post-war devastation and hoping to strike it rich in the silver mines, the owner sets off for Mexico, taking June with him, leaving Coleman to care for his wife and daughter. However, two years later, a letter arrives from Harper demanding that he deliver the woman and her daughter to her husband, and the young man accompanies them on this dangerous journey.

The journey to Mexico is long, and the sea and desert are equally merciless. Coleman must flee from the killers who are hot on his heels. The only refuge is the mysterious settlement of Amity, where runaway slaves are building a new life. But the past does not let go, and the path to freedom turns out to be dangerous and long.
