This edition presents the second volume of the fundamental work "History of the Social Order of Ancient France" by the outstanding French historian of the 19th century, Num Denis Fustel de Coulanges. The book tells about the IV-V centuries AD. - complex period of existence of Roman Gaul and the Empire itself. During this time, a powerful aristocracy emerges in Gaul. Emperors still exist, but obedience to them disappears, and the preponderance tilts to the side of large landowners. However, this class did not know how to fight or command. During this period the barbarians in the person of the Germanic tribes more than ever began to threaten Gaul. In the empire flowed scattered units, the extreme mobility of which bewildered Roman commanders. Many units of barbarians passed through the whole of Gaul, plundering it. The only tribes that managed to settle there were the Visigoths, Burgundians and Franks. The Visigoths occupied the southwestern lands, the Burgundians occupied the Rhone basin, and the Franks settled in the north of Gaul. All this happened by agreement with the Romans. Officially they were Roman soldiers, not conquerors. Barbarian guests, as they were called, were often dangerous, sometimes useful, but they were not hosts.
