Medieval alchemists struggled to create a philosopher's stone capable of turning ordinary metals into gold. Stalin's leadership succeeded in creating a semblance of it. The philosopher's stone of Soviet industrialization was the Torgsin stores, where, during the famine years of the first five-year period, Soviet citizens were forced to exchange gold, currency, and precious metal goods for rye flour, cereal, sugar, and simple consumer goods. Torgsin became a cynical way to replenish the budget of the Soviet state, which began modernization of the country being bankrupt, having no gold and foreign exchange reserves. The rapid leap of a peasant country into an industrial future was largely financed by the personal savings of its citizens. The book is full of details of everyday life in the 1930s, the era of the formation of Soviet consumer culture, planned economy, shortages and black market. Elena Osokina is a doctor of historical sciences, professor, author of books on the socio-economic history of the first decades of Soviet power.
