The four parts of the novel-tetralogy "Alexandria Quartet" do not bear the names of their main characters for nothing. The reader can look at the same events - the life of Egyptian Alexandria before and during the Second World War - through the eyes of completely different people. The decline of colonialism, anti-British revolt, political and private life - phenomena and people become much clearer when you can see them from different angles. The author himself called the tetralogy an experiment to explore the continuum and subject-object relations on the material of modern love. In the first three books - "Justine", "Balthazar" and "Mountolive" - these connections are gradually revealed in all their complexity and intricacy, united by time and place. In the fourth book, "Clea," the author ties the storylines together and allows us to trace the development of relationships and destinies through time, concluding the narrative. The text of this edition was revised by translator V. Mikhailin and supplemented with an introductory article and commentary.
