According to Plutarch, Alexander the Great founded about 60 cities. And Alexandria of Egypt was one of them. The city grew and rose very quickly thanks to trade, which in turn was greatly facilitated by its extremely favorable location. During the Ptolemaic dynasty Alexandria became the center not only of the Mediterranean, but also of the entire Hellenistic culture. At the beginning of the 3rd century BC, the Alexandrian Museion, a religious, research, educational and cultural center of Hellenism; the Temple of the Muses, was built in the city. The Museion included the extensive Library of Alexandria, established during the same period. Scholars admitted to the staff of the Museion were engaged in natural philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, geography, medicine, music theory, linguistics, and other sciences. The next book in the series tells about the rich history of the great city, the rich religious life and the wonders of Alexandrian science.
