The history of the wars between these Livonians and Sweden against Novgorod for control of Finland and Karelia, as well as the conquest of the Izhorian and Votian regions, is highlighted separately.
The most important battles of those years—the Battle of the Neva in 1240, the Battle on the Ice in 1242, the Battle of Rakovor in 1268, and others—are specifically examined. The material is presented in exquisite detail, drawing on all available sources, both domestic and foreign: from the "onset to the East" to counter-conquests and the actions of Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky.
