Alexander Kozhev: An Intellectual Biography

Alexandre Kojève (née Kozhevnikov; 1902–1968) was a Russian-French philosopher and diplomat, one of the architects of the European Union. His lecture course on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit, delivered in the 1930s at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, became a seminal event in French intellectual life. These lectures form the basis of the contemporary discourse on the end of history and the end of humanity, in which humans are seen as enemies of nature, and the concept and status of the human become problematic. In his new book (2025), philosopher and critic Boris Groys explores the various stages and facets of Kojève's intellectual biography: from his rethinking of the legacy of early 20th-century Russian religious philosophy to his passion for photography.
