The fate of Emperor Alexander I is full of contradictory events and fatal turns. He is a glorious conqueror of Napoleon, but an indecisive reformer; a skillful and cunning diplomat, but a deeply vulnerable and anxious person; "a weak and sly ruler", but "a sphinx, unraveled to the grave".

The novel by D.S. Merezhkovsky "Alexander I" tells about the last months of the emperor's reign, the formation of secret societies and preparations for the future Decembrist uprising. Against the backdrop of dramatic events in the history of the country, the reader is presented with the images of the emperor himself and his entourage: his wife, confidants and courtiers.

The work by D.S. Merezhkovsky is accompanied by the publication of the memoirs of the maid of honor of the imperial court Sophia Choiseul-Gouffier, as well as selected fragments from the extensive work of the historian N.K. Schilder.
