Lukin is in the top five of the best contemporary Russian fiction writers for sure. Maybe even in the top three. I'm not naming names. And science fiction is a conditional genre. Lukin is broader than fiction as a genre and as a literary direction. He writes about our life, turning it inside out. For example, Lukin invented the town of Bakluzhino. Well, invented, who can not happen. Andrei Platonov invented the town of Chevengur, before him Saltykov-Shchedrin invented the town of Glupov. These cities were populated by the population. Different, ordinary and unusual, like me and like you, with all our fantastic conventions, petty and not petty villainy, with a devil living in the head, and with an angel behind the shoulder on the right. And often fictional writers get somehow that the world they invented, where life is turned inside out, turns out to be livelier and brighter than the one that surrounds us. And truer for some reason. Although, when you look closely, these invented worlds are a complete reflection of ours, but seen through a magic device called the writer's eye. If you start counting all the prizes and awards Lukin has received since the beginning of his writing career, you will lose track of the fifth or sixth dozen. He has over a hundred of them. "Aelita", "Wanderer", "Bronze Snail", "ABS-premium", Interpresscon, Roskon, named after Ivan Efremov, Belyaev Prize, "Golden Ostap" and a variety of others. Even "Literaturnaya Gazeta" once announced him as the winner of the "Golden Calf" award for his ironic poems. And in 2015 Lukin was honored as Grandmaster of European Fiction. Works about Bakluzhino and its surroundings, scattered in numerous collections, have long begged to be collected together.
