The Akathist to Saint Tikhon of Zadonsk is a compact spiritual resource for home prayer and attentive reading. It's convenient to take to church and on the road, and also makes a wonderful gift for loved ones, especially for Christmas and Easter. Tikhon was born in 1724 to a poor clergyman in the village of Korotsk. He soon lost his father. His childhood and adolescence were spent in dire poverty: he had to work all day for the villagers just to earn his daily bread. From an early age, Tikhon understood the value of work and compassion, and this deeply impacted his life. A miraculous rescue from mortal danger and several visions led him to embrace monasticism. He was tonsured a monk with the name Tikhon. Later, he became a hieromonk and, by clear direction from above, was chosen as a bishop. His time, with the exception of four or five hours of rest, was devoted to prayer, reading the word of God, charitable works, and composing spiritually beneficial works. Often, dressed in simple monastic garb, he traveled to the nearest town (Yelets) to visit the prisoners in the local prison, offering them comfort and encouragement. He spent his last 16 years in peace at Zadonsk Monastery. Saint Tikhon's blessed death occurred on August 13, 1783. Sixty-three years later, his incorrupt relics were discovered, and in 1861, he was canonized. Tikhon is a saint to whom people come with prayer; he hears and supports.
