For three centuries, any Chinese bookstore has been stocked with Pu Sun-lin's short stories of foxes and werewolves, wizards and ghosts, strange animals, cursed mirrors, talking birds, paintings that come to life, and much, much more. In fact, Pu Sun-lin's books have long since crossed the borders of China, and are now read all over the world in all major languages. Their author was a scholar of Confucian upbringing and, strictly speaking, it was not at all appropriate for him to write stories containing all sorts of miracles and erotic motifs. However, Pu Sun-lin became famous for such books, becoming the most famous Chinese writer of his time. His work was inspired by folk parables, but over time the author's stories themselves became folklore and were passed on by word of mouth by ordinary storytellers. This edition publishes all four collections of Pu Sun-lin's stories that were published in Russian, in remarkable translations by the Chinese philologist Vasily Mikhailovich Alekseev, with detailed notes and original Chinese engravings.
