Over thirty years of practical work, A.V. Kibovsky managed to identify and return the lost names to many portraits of "unknowns" that are stored in 125 museums and private collections. 820 paintings, watercolors, drawings and miniatures are presented in the new book. Among them are works by 236 artists, including the best masters - Levitsky, Borovikovsky, Kiprensky, Bryullov, Tropinin, Kramskoy, Makovsky, Yaroshenko, Repin, Surikov and many others. The book also contains an essay on the development of the historical-subject method of attribution, starting from 1881, which tells about its difficult and sometimes tragic twists and turns in the twentieth century and those scientists who laid the theoretical and practical foundations that ensured the scientific recognition of the method at the turn of our century. In 2019, the first edition of the work "500 Unknown" was highly appreciated by the professional community. The book became the winner of the National Competition "Book of the Year", and its author was awarded the medal of the Russian Academy of Arts "Shuvalov" and entered into the Book of Records of Russia for the largest number of attributions of portraits with the establishment of the names of the depicted characters. The new edition is supplemented with three hundred portraits. In addition, the historiographical essay has been significantly expanded, and the methodological part has been given in a more detailed and structured manner. The publication is addressed to a wide range of readers and represents the largest reference book on military iconography today. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that until recently all these portraits were listed as "unknown" or were even signed by other people's names. Many attributions are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.
