A stratagem is a behavioral algorithm, a calculated sequence of actions aimed at achieving a hidden goal or solving a problem, while taking into account the object's psychology, its position, the environment, and other specific features of the situation. This concept has existed in Chinese culture for at least three thousand years.

It is impossible to pinpoint the exact date of this collection of stratagems. The book can be roughly dated to the Ming Dynasty, although it does not indicate either the author or the date. Authorship has been variously attributed to Sun Tzu (Spring and Autumn period) and Zhuge Liang (Three Kingdoms period). Most modern scholars believe that the treatise emerged from oral and written tradition and has had numerous versions and authors.
