In the early 1920s, M. Bulgakov wrote three novellas in succession: "The Devil's Play" (1923), "The Fatal Eggs" (1924), and "Heart of a Dog" (1925). These were immediate and violent reactions to the "Sovietization" of Russia and the rise of the "Sharikov" caste.
The novellas "The Devil's Play" and "The Fatal Eggs" were published in 1924 and 1925, respectively. "Heart of a Dog" waited forty-three years for its moment. Bulgakov the satirist continued the traditions of Russian prose—Gogol and Saltykov-Shchedrin. And in his early novellas, one can already discern the outlines of future chapters of "The Master and Margarita."
