XNUMX Leagues Under the Sea is the second book in the Captain Nemo Trilogy. The writer continues to acquaint readers with new characters describing their amazing adventures in the depths of the sea. Jules Verne came up with a twisted plot, pitting the characters against a mysterious captain and his amazing Nautilus, ahead of its time. All illustrations are made by the master of book graphics Peter Lugansky, an artist who perfectly conveys an exciting story with pen and brush.
The novel "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" was written by Jules Verne just a year after "The Children of Captain Grant" - in 1869. Like the first novel of the famous trilogy, united by common characters, it was published in parts on the pages of a magazine published in Paris by the famous publisher Pierre - Jules Etzel. In 1870, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea was published as a separate book. The history of the creation of submarines by this time totaled at least two and a half hundred years, but these designs could not be compared with the miracle of engineering that Jules Verne described in his novel. Even modern nuclear submarines are still far from his Nautilus. However, the writer's novels owed their success not only to bold futuristic paintings. They are distinguished by a dynamic plot. Brave and noble heroes act in the writer's works, and such people appearing in each new generation always arouse admiration. This is the secret of the success of the works of Jules Verne today. It is no coincidence that at the end of his life, Jules Verne not only won fame as the founder of science fiction, but also became a classic of adventure literature. In the difficult post-war years, when our country was rebuilding after a bloody war with fascist Germany, an unfamiliar and alluring world was visibly opened before domestic readers of Jules Verne's adventure novels. Brave heroes and tireless pioneers acted in it, who made their way through the dense thickets of the jungle, overcame mountain passes, plowed the seas on sailboats and even descended into the depths of the ocean. All these bewitching pictures could be seen with one's own eyes thanks to the talent of the remarkable draftsman Pyotr Ivanovich Lugansky, whose illustrations also adorn this publication. Where and how did he explore the nature he painted? Did you sit in the archives? Studied drawings of sailboats? Flipping through old albums? It is hardly possible now to answer these questions with certainty. Perhaps Lugansky simply possessed a powerful creative imagination, which allowed him to faithfully reproduce pictures of life that he had never seen with his own eyes? The artist did not leave the borders of Soviet Russia. Before the war, he graduated from the oldest art school in Kharkov, which is now called the State Academy of Design and Art. During the war with Nazi Germany, Peter Lugansky fought in a rifle division on the Leningrad front, where he was seriously wounded. In Leningrad, he left behind his wife and young daughter Yulia. Pyotr Ivanovich kept her album with drawings until his death in 1993.
