The English writer, critic, essayist, and journalist George Orwell made literary history primarily with his final novel, 1984, which became one of the defining dystopian novels of the 20th century. The future society he depicts is based on total individual deprivation, propaganda, and outright violence—all of which, according to the author's bitter and ominous prediction, have triumphed in the fictional state of Oceania by 1984. This collection also includes the famous satirical novella Animal Farm, in which animals, having driven their owner from a farm, attempt to create a just society based on the laws of universal equality. However, this proves no easy task, for, as the famous Animal Farm precept states: "All animals are equal. But some animals are more equal than others."
