This book by the distinguished historian M.V. Nechkina (1899–1985), the most renowned scholar of the Decembrist movement, is dedicated to the momentous day of December 14, 1825. This is the day of the Decembrist uprising in St. Petersburg on Senate Square. The Decembrists are often called the "firstborn of Russian freedom." They developed a broad program of reforms that were intended to completely transform Russia's governmental structure, granting fundamental rights and freedoms to its population. Members of the Decembrist societies meticulously prepared for their uprising, but it ended in defeat. "There is a common belief that the Decembrist uprising was a 'standing one,' that the rebels' guns 'didn't fire,' that Nicholas I routed the unresisting mutinous regiments on Senate Square, more an armed demonstration than an uprising... Is this true?" writes M.V. Nechkina. To answer these questions, she conducts a detailed study of all the events of December 14, 1825.
