1951. On the bank of the river stands a moss-covered oak tree, the Wishing Tree, which has long kept other people's secrets. According to legend, if you write your innermost wish on a ribbon and put it in the hollow, it will come true. Three friends - Margaret, Bitty and Sissy - decide to test their fate. They make a wish, which actually starts to come true. But not in the way they would have liked.
Our days. Larkin returns to the uninhabited, dilapidated house after a fire where she once lived with her mother Ivy and with Sissy, who raised them both. Trying to understand what started the house fire, Larkin delves into the mysteries of the distant past, and it forces her to rethink her own life and her relationship with her loved ones.
