At the beginning of the 20th century, several navies simultaneously decided to switch to using main artillery composed entirely of the heaviest guns. The first and most famous ship of this innovation was the Dreadnought, which gave its name to a whole generation of battleships with large guns. Parallel to it, but independent of its design, was created the American "South Carolina", which had in many respects a similarly revolutionary design.
