The Devil in the Life, Legends, and Literature of the Middle Ages stands apart in the work of the most popular writer of the Silver Age, Alexander Amfiteatrov (1862-1938). Picking up from Italian professor Arturo Graf's book The Devil, which focused on theological literature, Amfiteatrov went much further than his primary source. He made an attempt to examine the life of the Devil in human consciousness across the cultural space of the Middle Ages, from the time when a detailed biography of him was developed at the dawn of Christianity to the days when the idea that gave him life had almost become obsolete. Brilliant erudition enabled Amfitheatrov to draw not only on Western but also on Russian sources, to use mythology, etc. He sets forth the genealogy of Satan, tells about his physiology and psychology, describes the devil's temptations, intrigues and obsessions, touches upon the subtleties of demon magic, gives the floor to eyewitnesses who have been to hell, and gives details of the clergy's struggle with the devil.
