Joel Chandler Harris, the author of this book, at the age of sixteen worked as a messenger on a plantation and often heard black slaves singing mischievous songs and telling witty tales. After becoming a writer, J. Harris returned to an unusual for its time theme - the theme of Negro folklore. He reworked and supplemented the tales and songs he had heard before. Thus appeared "Uncle Remus's Tales" - kind, funny and instructive stories about resourceful Brother Rabbit, cunning Brother Fox and their friends. Since then, for more than a hundred years, children all over the world have been wondering whether Brother Fox will catch Brother Rabbit or whether the long-eared trickster will manage to outsmart his hapless neighbor again.
