How did World War II change the history of soccer? How closely was the popular game linked to the most terrible events of the 20th century, from the Holocaust to the siege of Leningrad? And how did soccer become an impulse to resist evil? This book, based on publications in the sports media, tells the stories of outstanding soccer players, coaches and managers from Austria, Hungary, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and other countries who were imprisoned in concentration camps, forced into hiding, emigrated, and died during World War II and the Holocaust. Many of them were or became legends of their clubs and national teams, made a significant contribution to the transition of European soccer to the professional level. The book introduces the reader to little-known pages of soccer matches in the occupied territory of the USSR and myths surrounding the so-called "death match" in Kiev, and also tells about matches in besieged Leningrad, in the newly liberated Stalingrad, about the games of Soviet teams in Iran and archival documents on the "case of the Starostin brothers". In the final part, the authors summarize the modern experience of combating anti-Semitism and racism in soccer.
