How do the grotesque and carnival manifest themselves in fashion? How does fashion relate to performance art? Can experimental fashion become mainstream? Francesca Granata's book is devoted to provocative and eccentric phenomena that take us far away from the usual ideas not only about high fashion, but also about the body. The author focuses on the work of designers who have entered the history of fashion with their bold experiments: Rei Kawakubo, Georgina Godley, Martin Margiela, Bernard Wilhelm, and performance master Lee Bowery. All of them managed to shift the boundaries of the corporeal, to shake conventional ideas about the reference body, the absolute of classical style, about femininity, about the very topography of the body. Investigating the phenomenon of grotesque body, which turned out to be in the center of experiments of fashion designers of the late XX century, the author relies on the theory of grotesque developed by M. M. Bakhtin. Bakhtin. The phenomena of displacement, deconstruction, and the search for latent meanings of the corporeal in the sphere of experimental fashion are examined through the prism of the ideas of Z. Freud, J. Derrida, M. Foucault, and other intellectuals. The author's interviews with participants of unusual performances and creators of experimental fashion - Lee Bowery's widow, Georgina Godley - immerse the reader in the period of 1980s, unfolding a wide panorama of ideas and trends that have largely determined the modern attitude to corporeality and fashion. Francesca Granata is PhD, Associate Professor at Parsons School of Design (New York).
