Everyday Life of a Dagestani Woman: The Caucasian War and Socio-Cultural Changes of the 19th Century

The Caucasus War had a huge impact not only on the political fate of the region, but also on the everyday life of the peoples living there. In her book, Oksana Mutieva explores the impact of this conflict on the domestic and social life of Dagestani women. How did the Caucasian War change their habits and behavior, personal, social and legal status? For what purpose and in what forms did women take part in military actions? How did the Russian reforms of the mid- and late 19th century affect their situation? Drawing on a wide variety of material - from legal acts and ego documents to folklore and the local press - the author explores the experiences of local women forced to adapt to the region's acute political and military crisis. The heroines of this book are ordinary Dagestani women, representatives of the families of the Caucasian administration, wives of military and government officials who, by the will of fate, became participants in those events. Oksana Mutieva is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of National History at Dagestan State University.
