How did Paris arrive in 1789? What did Parisians really think and feel in the decades leading up to the French Revolution? In his new book, the distinguished historian Robert Darnton offers an original answer: he explores not so much the political and economic causes of the revolution as the maturation of a special "revolutionary temperament"—a collective mindset that made the explosion of 1789 possible. Darnton immerses the reader in the thick of Parisian life from 1748 to 1789, tracing the formation of a new public consciousness through the unique "multimedia system" of the Old Regime: how news of war, taxes, royal mistresses, and hot air balloon flights were transformed into songs, pamphlets, rumors, and gossip, spreading from salons and coffee houses to markets and workshops. By analyzing the circulation of these information flows, the author reconstructs the social experience of the townspeople and explains how, forty years before the storming of the Bastille, a readiness for radical change was ingrained in their consciousness.
