The memoirs of Iosif Berger (1904-1978), one of the founders of the Communist Party of Palestine and head of the Middle East Department of the Comintern, who found himself caught in the millstones of repression, are a reliable account of the tragic fate of a generation of revolutionaries during the Great Terror. The author, who served time on Solovki and in Siberian camps, describes in detail the daily life and structure of life behind barbed wire, recounts the stories of his fellow prisoners—old Bolsheviks, Lenin's comrades, ordinary workers, and members of the intelligentsia—and provides little-known information about Yuri Yesenin, the poet's son, convicted of participating in a "terrorist conspiracy." In his book, Iosif Berger-Barzilai, one of the few prominent party members to survive Stalin's camps, reflects on the nature of power, the value of human life, and examines the key processes of the era through the eyes of a foreign political prisoner.
