In the third book of American author Laura Ingles Wilder's acclaimed autobiographical epic, eight-year-old Laura's large family heads West again in search of a peaceful place where there will be fertile land, plenty to eat, and the children can learn. At first the family settles in a dugout, but one day Pete the bull is right over their dwelling and falls through the roof. Of course, the skillful papa built a new sturdy house. However, trouble continued to plague the family. They had to endure a locust invasion and lose all their crops, fight a steppe fire that almost took away their home, and endure brutal blizzards and frosts in winter. Natural disasters seriously disrupt the family's plans, and sometimes even threaten death. But, most importantly, the girls finally go to school, and bright Laura makes progress. True communication with her peers is not always happy Laura: girls from rich families consider her a "hillbilly", but Laura knows how to stand up for herself. And Daddy Charles, a man of extraordinary resilience and fortitude, for the happiness of his beloved wife and daughters can overcome any difficulties. The book unobtrusively teaches children to be polite and obey their elders. "Children should be seen, but should not be heard," - from time to time reminds daughters mom. The text is easy to read, but the plot of this realistic story (as well as other books in this series) is very informative and will be interesting not only to teenagers, but also to adult readers.
