When Michelle was born, her mother did not return to work, but decided to devote herself to her child. She made sure her daughter studied hard and took good care of her skin, avoided wrinkling her forehead and slouching, and instilled in her a love of order, Korean culture and delicacies.

But as she grew older, Michelle grew increasingly weighed down by her mother's rules and demands. She didn't want to study or wear dresses, she liked to play guitar and wear stretchy second hand t-shirts. She never learned Korean because she lived in America.

When Michelle was twenty-five, her mom was gone. And more than anything else in the world she wanted to become a little girl again, to have her mother fix her bangs, smooth out the wrinkle between her eyebrows, make a remark on her posture... Trying to cope with grief, Michelle learns to cook her favorite dishes from her childhood. Twenjang tighe soup and jjatjuk porridge, fermented kimchi cabbage and pickled galbi ribs - these flavors help Michelle come to terms with her loss, feel her mother's love again, and find herself.
