Thirty years have passed. We are slowly but surely mitigating climate change. But what about all those grumpy old people who can’t come to terms with the future?

For young people, climate change won’t be a debate. It’s just an insurmountable fact of life. A brutal reality. Entire cities are being moved inland by rising sea levels. Massive renewable energy projects are springing up everywhere. Disaster relief, flood and superstorm cleanup, have become skills that millions of people learn every year. It’s a global activity. It employs anyone who wants to work. Even when the far right regains power, the momentum is too great; these massive programs can’t be quickly put on hold.

But there are still members of the previous generation who cling to their red baseball caps, their grievances, their big SUVs, their anger. Their “alternative” news sources assure us that the discontent is justified and valid, and that “climate change” is just a giant “leftist” scam.

And this is your grandfather, your uncle, your great-aunt. They will not give up power easily. And they are armed to the teeth.

“Lost Cause” asks: what do we do with people who cling to the belief that their own children are the enemy? When they themselves are often the very elders we love?
