The writer and poet James Oliver Curwood (1878-1927) is known to our readers mainly as a naturalist who wrote stories about animals for children. Meanwhile, he wrote many novels, novellas and short stories for adults, where he praised not only the nature of the northern states of the United States and Canada, but also the people who lived and worked in the American North in the XIX - early XX century: trappers, pioneers, officers of the Royal Mounted Police, sailors, prospectors, loggers, Indians and Aleuts. In this respect, he can rightly be called the predecessor of Jack London. This is confirmed by the works included in this volume collection of stories "Return to the Land of God" and the novel "Woman from the Land of the Lord God"
In the collection of short stories "Return to the Land of God" geography of action extends from the far north of Alaska to the rivers and mountains of eastern and central Canada, from a sailing ship adrift in the ice to the river canoe race, where the prize is the hand of a girl. Heroes bring justice where the hand of the law cannot reach, miraculously avoid death by cold in the depths of the forest, overcome the hellish sulfur swamps in search of missing gold miners.
