Nikolai Butskikh is a culturologist, translator, founder of the Center for Research of Old Russian Culture "Zelo", author of the textbook "Church Slavonic Language of Old Russian Monuments of the XI-XVIII centuries", as well as courses devoted to various aspects of Old Russian visual culture.
The book is devoted to one of the most interesting phenomena of Old Russian culture - cryptography. Despite the fact that encrypted texts are found since the beginning of writing in Russia and are actively used in the Old Believers even in the XX century, this topic remains understudied. The names of prominent scribes, owners and readers, records of intellectual and entertaining character, as well as secret messages are hidden on the pages of books, walls of Old Russian cathedrals, icons, crosses, bells, objects of utilitarian purpose, and still remain unsolved.
The edition presents the most significant systems of Old Russian cryptography accompanied by original records (XI-XX centuries) and their decipherments. Many of them are made by the author and published for the first time.
