The human path to God and the lives of unknown Orthodox ascetics of the 20th century are the main themes of the stories of Orthodox writer Valery Lyalin (1928–2010). The author succeeded in the daunting task of writing about the Kingdom of God, which "is within us." The characters—monks, priests, soldiers, and residents of remote villages—are presented not in a glorious aura of holiness, but in the ordinary, humble simplicity of everyday life. However, they carry within themselves a light that illumines their lives, imbues the poverty of everyday life with meaning, and helps them find the path to God. Approved for distribution by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
