Malory completed Le Morte d'Arthur around 1470, and its first publication took place fifteen years later, in 1485, thanks to the publisher William Caxton. Malory's novel is rooted in the tales of the mighty king of the Britons (Celts), who once inhabited the territory of modern-day Britain and part of France. Legends of the ancient ruler's exploits long lived in popular memory, periodically inspiring medieval poets to compose ballads and songs about Arthur. Around the 13th century, an unidentified author, or group of authors, based numerous poems about the exploits of King Arthur's knights on a cycle of romances written in Old French. This cycle is now known as the Lancelot-Grail or Vulgate. This massive work details the twists and turns of Arthur's life and that of the heroes of his inner circle. Using Lancelot and the Grail as a source of information about the adventures of the Knights of the Round Table, Malory created a well-structured, coherent, and vibrant work of fiction. It extols honor, loyalty, and courage. Valiant warriors seek the Holy Grail, the seer and wizard Merlin guides the fearless king, and the cunning Morgan le Fay creates all manner of obstacles. Unlike other chivalric romances, the narrative of Le Morte d'Arthur centers on warrior brotherhood rather than the protagonist's emotional struggles or court intrigue. Through Malory's efforts, the images of the Knights of the Round Table and their noble king have become firmly entrenched not only in English but also in world culture, continuing to influence new generations of writers, musicians, and artists to this day. This edition of "The Death of Arthur" is translated by philologist and member of the USSR Writers' Union Inna Maksimovna Bernshtein (1929–2012). The text is embellished with works by the distinguished British artist and master book illustrator Aubrey Beardsley (1872–1898).
