Ada Belskaya should be careful, as the gray star on her sleeve is a sign of disloyalty. Her mother didn't die in the Third Confrontation, like other heroes, but went missing. In the Plains Union, this is tantamount to treason.
Worthy citizens of the state wear bright stars on their sleeves. They work hard, are loyal to their country, and are willing to die for it. Criminals, the sick, and the elderly are destined for the recycling bin. But the Parents' Committee sends delinquent children to OLYMPs—General Education Lyceums for the Correction of Moral Pathologies—for re-education. This is where Ada ends up after a fight with a classmate.
The correctional lyceum is ruled by a stern headmistress, feared even by the teachers. A snow-white uniform with a black star on the shoulder, barred windows that are off-limits, and CCTV cameras everywhere—that's how Ada lives now. Girls are cruelly punished for the slightest offense. Their ability to think and dream is taken away. In this place, Ada tries to remain herself and preserve what's most precious to her – her own thoughts.
This dystopia by the young writer Lyubava Gornitskaya was longlisted for the Kniguru All-Russian Competition for the Best Children's and Youthful Work and shortlisted for the V.P. Krapivin Prize in 2021.
For middle school age.
