Francesca Giannone’s novel takes place in the author’s homeland, Lizzanello, in Salento (Puglia, Italy), where in June 1934, a northerner Anna comes with her husband, a southerner Carlo, who is very happy to return to his native places, and a young son. For the locals, Anna will always remain a “foreigner,” an angular, self-willed arrogant, sharp-tongued and unwilling to follow the conservative traditions of the South, these age-old unwritten laws that bind southern women. And for Antonio, Carlo's older brother, his wife, beautiful as an antique statue, will become love at first sight. A year later, in 1935, Anna does something truly revolutionary: she participates in the postal competition, wins it and becomes the first postman of Lizzanello. This news makes women turn their noses away from her and causes ridicule of men. "It won't last long," someone quips. Instead, for more than twenty years, Anna will become the invisible thread that unites the people of the country. First on foot, and then on a bicycle, she will deliver letters from soldiers from the front, postcards of emigrants, messages from secret lovers. Unwittingly – but above all without the public’s will – the postman Anna will change a lot in Lizzanello.
The story of Anna is the story of a woman who wanted to live her life without convention, and it is the story of the Greco family and the town of Lizzanello from the 1930s to the 1950s. The story of two brothers who are destined to love one woman.
