"Carved Steel" - weapons as art and weapons in art. The very title suggests the concept of the book offered to the reader. In the vast majority of works devoted to ancient weapons, this topic remains outside the scope of the study or it is touched upon in passing. These works acquaint the reader with samples of antique weapons, but usually they are published in the form of exhibition catalogs or monographs, in which these or those types of weapons are subjected to scientific analysis. Decorated weapons and armor are rarely considered in connection with other types of monumental and applied art.
In the present work an attempt is made to tell about weapons as one of the most important types of decorative and applied art, about the origins of its emergence and development over the last millennium. Special attention is paid to such important concepts as ornament and epoch. They are inextricably linked. Each epoch in the history of mankind and in the history of culture gave birth to its own type of ornament, which is clearly traced in works of art. The album contains more than 500 photographs and reproductions.
