This is the fifth edition of M. Boytsov and R. Shukurov's well-regarded textbook on the history of the Middle Ages, devoted to the history of Western Europe, Byzantium and the Islamic world in the V-XV centuries.
The authors of the textbook are major specialists in medieval history. Mikhail Boytsov is a specialist on medieval Germany, Rustam Shukurov - on Byzantium, the Turkic world and Iran.
The textbook was previously published in a similar textual content by the Moscow Institute for the Development of Educational Systems (MIROS) - first as an experimental textbook in 1994, and then, with a ministerial stamp, it was reprinted three more times: in 1994, 1995, and 1998 under the title "History of the Middle Ages. Textbook for the sixth grade of secondary schools". According to the authors, the textbook was revolutionary for its time, and many of the solutions that were first proposed in it were later reproduced by others. Some topics, also first introduced in the pages of this book, were then included in the ministerial standards and became mandatory for all.
One of the main advantages of the textbook is that it presents a special, profound vision of the diverse and contradictory Middle Ages, which was nevertheless neither a time of decline nor stagnation; it was a regular and regular stage of history, an epoch that has its own tasks and carries with it the consequences of the previous one and the causes of the subsequent one. To understand this, it is necessary to learn not just to collect facts about the past, but to understand them.
The paragraphs of the textbook are compact, written in simple, clear, accessible language. The titles of paragraphs and paragraphs, while accurately reflecting the essence of the content, sound like invitations to a fascinating journey. The textbook illustrations are spectacular and original. Authentic images, reconstructions, maps, and charts are used. After each paragraph are translations of fragments of documents by medieval chroniclers (such as Jordan, Procopius of Caesarea, Gregory of Tours, Severinus Boethius, etc.), as well as Arabic poetry, songs of the Crusades, and so on.
