Not every generation is destined to meet on its way such a blessed gift of heaven, as was the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna. After the death of her husband - Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov, killed in 1905 by the terrorist Kalyaev - she founded in Zamoskvorechye, on the Great Ordynka, the first in Russia abode of mercy. It housed a free hospital, an outpatient clinic, a pharmacy and a canteen for the poor, a shelter for orphaned girls, a hostel for sisters, two temples, a Sunday school and an extensive library. After the revolution, the Grand Duchess refused to leave Russia, was arrested and on July 18, 1918 she was thrown alive into a mine near the city of Alapayevsk. The Marfo-Mariinsk monastery of mercy, created by her, existed until 1926.

The revival of the monastery began in 1992, when by the decree of the capital government the architectural complex was transferred to the Moscow Patriarchate. Judging by the memories that the last abbess of the Marfo-Mariinsk monastery left us and which were included in this book, Mother Nadezhda was lucky - she knew Elizabeth Feodorovna closely. When the nun was asked what virtue Elisaveta Feodorovna considered important, she replied: “Mercy.” This book is devoted to the main work of the life of the Holy Monk Martyr, Grand Duchess Elizabeth, a monastery that today calls to serve the mercy of each of us – every person living on earth.
