"The Life of Klim Samgin" is the last work of the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (1868-1936), who made a significant contribution to the development of Soviet literature. As the events of the novel unfold, its main character, Klim Samgin, a man of not the most outstanding intelligence, completely devoid of individuality, desperately tries to present himself as a bright, deep person in the eyes of others. The novel is decorated with illustrations by three artists who worked under the pseudonym Kukryniksy. Drawings by Mikhail Vasilyevich Kupriyanov (1903-1991), Porfiry Nikitich Krylov (1902-1990) and Nikolai Aleksandrovich Sokolov (1903-2000) will help the reader to penetrate the depth of Maxim Gorky's magnificent novel.
The novel tells the story of a representative of the Russian intelligentsia of the pre-revolutionary era, Klim Samgin. Empty and spiritually poor, throughout the narrative he plays the role of a thinking, bright man and desperately tries not to allow his true colorless nature to be exposed. Historical figures appear on the pages of the novel, ideological disputes sound, and the diversity of public sentiments during a period of fundamental change is demonstrated. Gorky sought to depict as accurately as possible forty years of Russian reality from the 1880s to 1918. The writer claimed that this would be the most significant work among all that had ever come from his pen.
