In the history of Russian Soviet literature Konstantin Mikhailovich Simonov (1915-1979) entered as a novelist, poet, playwright, screenwriter, memoirist, but defining for his biography and creativity was the work of a war correspondent on the battlefields of World War II. Direct experience of the war or memories of it permeated everything written by Simonov since the early forties - from the famous poem "Wait for me" (1941) to the late novels "Twenty Days Without War" (1973) and "We will not see you" (1978). The novel "The Living and the Dead", published in 1959-1971, is one of the most significant works of Russian literature on the military theme. Not being a chronicle-documentary or historical work, this novel, however, is largely based on the materials of the writer's personal diaries for June-September 1941 (seen only in 1992 under the title "One Hundred Days of War") and his notes of different years, partly published in the form of front sketches; many of the characters brought out in the narrative, there were real prototypes. According to the first two books of the novel, the director A. Stolper made the feature films "The Living and the Dead" (1964) and "Retribution" (1967).
