This book is the most complete collection of the lives of saints for children and narratives about Orthodox holidays and icons of the Mother of God in Russian. It was written in the 80s of the last century by an altarman of one of the Moscow churches for his children. Now this altarman is Archpriest Konstantin Ostrovsky, and the children, of course, have long grown up, and two of them became priests themselves, and one became a bishop.
In those years, it was impossible to even dream of publishing such a book in Russia, but there was a “perestroika”, censorship restrictions disappeared, and in 1991 an abridged version of the book called “Life of Saints for Children” was published with a circulation of 55 thousand copies, and in 1996 it was reprinted with a circulation of 20 thousand copies.
Then the collection was significantly expanded and under the title "The Lives of the Saints, set out in the abbreviation for St. Dimitri of Rostov" was published in 4 editions. Now it is still supplemented by a large number of lives of saints of the Russian Orthodox Church who lived in the XX century, mostly New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
The book is written in simple language, accessible to children, but without forgery. This seems to be one of the main reasons for its continued popularity among readers.
