"Woman at 1000°C" is a sparkling confession by an eighty-year-old Icelandic woman named Herbjörg Björnsson, who lives alone in a garage in eastern Reykjavík, maintains an active online correspondence, and reminisces about her eventful life. Inspired by the memoirs of the granddaughter of Iceland's first president, the story recounts family joys and incredible twists of fate, as well as the tragedies and upheavals of the 20th century, including World War II in Denmark and Germany. The novel's emotional register is broad—from high tragedy and subtle lyricism to caustic satire on contemporary Icelandic society—and the author's style is unconventional, just like the narrator's biography. "Woman at 1000°C" was nominated for the Nordic Council Literary Prize (2012) and became a bestseller in many European countries. The book is published in Russian for the second time in a new edition.
