The foreign policy of the Russian Empire in the second half of the 19th century largely shifted from Europe to Asia. This can explain the annexation to Russia of a number of Central Asian states, such as Khiva, Bukhara and Kokand, and the swearing of allegiance to the Russian tsar by the native aristocracy of these lands. One of the participants of military expeditions to the hot and arid lands of Central Asia was Alexei Nikolaevich Kuropatkin, chief of staff of the famous General Skobelev. In his memoirs about these campaigns, he tells in detail about the difficulties that the Russian troops had to face, describes the life and manners of the peoples with whom the expedition participants had to meet, and gives a quite exhaustive characterization of the hostile tribes that in every way prevented the Russians from achieving their goal.
