Alexander Ivanovich Spiridovich (1873–1952) was one of the most renowned gendarme figures in pre-revolutionary Russia. A major general in the Separate Gendarme Corps, head of the imperial palace guard, and author of books on the Russian revolutionary movement, Spiridovich played a significant role in the development of Russian history and subsequently served as the prototype for characters in retrospective detective stories. His fascinating memoirs cover a vast period—from his entry into the cadet corps to the events of 1905—and provide details about the work of the tsarist secret police, its secret agents, and the fight against underground terrorist organizations. This historical narrative features many participants in the socio-political life of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both supporters of the current government and revolutionaries. Zealously fulfilling his duty, Spiridovich nevertheless managed to recreate in his memoirs, written shortly after his emigration from Russia, an objective picture of the impending demise of the empire.
