Lydia Charskaya (1875-1937) was a famous children's writer, author of many works for children and teenagers. Her books were unusually popular in the early twentieth century, especially among schoolgirls. And this is not surprising: after all, she wrote about their peers - gymnasium students and institute, subtly describing the mental experiences of young girls. In Soviet times, books Charskaya did not publish, and then they again became a classic of literature for primary school age.
Lena lived with her mother in a small town on the banks of the Volga, but she had to move to distant St. Petersburg and settled in the house of General Ikonin, her uncle. There the poor relative was met with hostility: cousins and sisters teased her, and adults unfairly punished her. In gymnasium she also had a hard time. However, over time, Lena found real friends, and her kindness was able to melt even icy hearts. Illustrations to the book belong to a wonderful Moscow artist Anna Vlasova, whom readers have long known and loved. For primary school age.
