The present edition consists of the last two major works of Vladimir Nabokov of the European period, written in Paris before leaving for America in 1940. Both had a decisive influence on all subsequent English-language work of the writer. The story The Magician (1939) is Nabokov's first attempt to set out the theme of Lolita, the novel Solus Rex (1940) is an approximation to the concept of Pale Fire. Regretting the incompleteness of Solus Rex, Nabokov remarked that "in its color, in its stylistic scope and abundance, in something indefinable in its powerful deep current, it promised to differ decisively from all my other Russian compositions." The Appendix publishes an excerpt from the archival typewritten text of "Solus Rex", omitted from the Parisian journal publication.
