The Red Army could not win the Civil War of 1917–1922. without tens of thousands of former officers who served in its ranks. At the same time, the very mention of the word "officer" at the beginning of 1918 in Soviet Russia could lead to extrajudicial reprisals. Therefore, former officers who went to serve in the new army of the "world's first state of workers and peasants" began to be called military specialists, or military experts for short. Everyone in the conditions of the Civil War had to make a difficult choice. Some played an outstanding role in the creation and strengthening of the Red Army in responsible positions. Others paid tribute to the era, imitating the revolutionaries, without regard for anything or anyone. Others showed themselves as heroes. There were victims among the military experts, and defectors, and conscious enemies of the Soviet regime - active figures of the white underground. A new study by A. V. Ganin, Doctor of Historical Sciences, is devoted to the life and difficult fate of military experts. The work is based on documents from thirty archives of Russia and foreign countries. The book is intended for all those interested in the military-political history of Russia and neighboring states in the revolutionary era.
