A military doctor, surgeon F.F. Grachev worked in a hospital in besieged Leningrad during the war years and left unique memories that occupy a special place among books about the blockade. Grachev's memoirs are extremely truthful, they show the incredible conditions in which people lived and worked in besieged Leningrad. A special place is given to the activities of the hospital itself, to problems not only medical, but also of a purely everyday nature, often of critical importance in an environment of terrible famine, bombing, and shelling. Through the wounded, the author of the book shows a whole gallery of the defenders of Leningrad - soldiers, officers, sailors, volunteers from among scientists, students, and writers. It is noteworthy that it was in this hospital that the later famous Soviet writer Fyodor Abramov was treated after being wounded.
